AppleWorks is an all-in-one Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Database, Graphics Editor, and Presentations tool. The original product was a text-based product for the Apple II. The Apple Macintosh and Windows versions were forked from ClarisWorks in 1998 by Apple. At the time, Apple was under a lot of pressure to have a direct alternative to Microsoft Office. There were serious concerns that Microsoft might pull Microsoft Office for the Macintosh from development.

BBS-PC (1987) 1 Communications DOS

BBS-PC! is an early computerized bulletin board system for IBM PCs. It also has versions for the Amiga. It featured customizability, message boards, and multiple file sections.

Borland dBase Compiler (1993) 1 DOS

Borland dBase Compiler is a dBase add-on that enables developers to create standalone high speed compiled dBase application. Developed by Ashton-Tate, the creators of dBase, it guarantees 100% compatibility with existing dBase applications. Applications built with the dBase Compiler do not require that the dBase product be installed, nor does it require any distribution royalties. Compiled applications will run many times faster than in dBase's interpreted environment. It includes support for 386 systems.

Borland Enterprise Server (2001) 1 Windows Unix

Borland Enterprise Server was Borland's Java EE Application Server. The product was developed in 1999 within the team of former Visigenic company that was acquired by Borland in 1997. Borland's Java Studio was supposed to have BES and JBuilder tightly integrated, but in reality this integration never happened. BES suffered compatibility problems even with Borland's own products (JDataStore, OptimizeIt). The appearance of free commercial grade (and more mature) application servers, like JBoss, made BES unattractive and unable to really compete with the former.

CA-Compete (1991) 2 Spreadsheet Financial Windows

CA-Compete! is a graphical, object-based, multi-dimensional modeling and data viewing tool that is as easy to use as a spreadsheet and as powerful as a decision support system (DSS) or executive information system (EIS). Compete! looks and works like a spreadsheet, but is object-based. In other words, you define the names that Compete! uses to identify and locate data in a model. A Compete! model can also contain many more dimensions than the spreadsheet norm of two or three.

This is a low-end spreadsheet program from Disk-Count software, a vendor notable for their budget software titles. "This program is designed for the first time user with the capability for more advanced users. A spreadsheet is ideal for calculating any set of numbers that you normally would do by hand. Some of the uses are for preparing home budgets, calculating financial payments, tracking car expenses, and creating statistical models."

These applications boast ease of use with a friendly menu interface wile remaining full-featured.

GraphPlan, from Chang Labs, is an integrated spreadsheet/business graphics package that turns numbers into presentation-quality graphics - instantly. Historically important as being among the early "integrated" spreadsheet/graphing packages, and it uses Digital Research's GSX, a core graphics system that evolved in to GEM.

The "HP Terminal Program" is a terminal emulator that graphically emulates a number Hewlett-Packard and standard terminal types. This product was bundled with some early HP Vectra computers. Supports CGA, EGA, Mono, and VGA graphics. It appears to be a lesser version of HP AdvanceLink.

HyperCard (1988) 4 Other Database MacOS

Hypercard is a graphical card "stack" oriented application and database programming tool for the Apple Macintosh. It features hypertext and hyperlinking of graphics and buttons, and includes an easy to use scripting language called HyperTalk. In many ways, it resembled a web browser, however it had no networking capability.

IBM 3270 Control Program (1985) 1 Communications DOS

IBM 3270 Control Program is the mainframe communication environment used by the IBM 3270 Personal Computer. The IBM 3270 Personal Computer was an IBM PC equipped with special hardware for communicating with IBM mainframes, however this special hardware greatly limited its IBM PC compatibility. The control program supported multiple mainframe sessions and could run an instance of IBM PC-DOS from within the control program. It also provides sessions a limited windowing environment.
