Video for Windows 1.x
Video for Windows was a multimedia framework for Windows 3.x that enabled direct or application embedded video playback, capture, and editing. It included new video and audio CODECs, but more importantly provided a modular framework so new ones could be added later. It was Microsoft's response to Apple QuickTime.
Windows 95/NT bundled Video for Windows as a system component. It was later partially superseded by ActiveMovie and DirectShow.
There existed both a commercial package, and a later reduced "runtime" version.
