Above DISC is a utility that provides simulated EMS "Expanded" memory using 286/386 native XMS "Extended" memory, or virtual hard disk memory.
EMS "Expanded" memory is a kind of memory expansion developed for 8088 based PC/XT computers. 8088/8086 computers can only address 1MB of memory, and usually no more than 640k can be used for system RAM. Expanded memory operates by mapping small "pages" of memory from a larger memory bank in to the limited 1MB address space.
Many applications such as Lotus 1-2-3, Paradox, Symphony, and Windows 2.x Excel could make use of this kind of memory. Software that was not updated for 286/386 XMS memory continued to require and additional Expanded memory card even when plenty of Extended memory was present.
This software removes the need for an additional Expanded memory card on 286/386 based systems, and also provides the option of using hard disk space as virtual memory.
