Clipper 5.x

Clipper, from Nantucket Corp and later Computer Associates, started out in 1985 as a native code compiler for dBase III databases, and later evolved in to a full fledged database language and application development environment.

It featured native code compilation that created much faster applications than dBase's interpreted system, with little or no changes to existing application code. Clipper included many enhancements and additions to the programming language, supported networked operation, and provided a royalty-free runtime.

It was a very popular development product for supporting existing dBase applications. But over time, new development moved toward other different database products.

5.3b was the last version.

It competed with dBXL, QuickSilver, and FoxBase.
