Can't get IE 5 16-bit to work properly on NT 3.51 (VMware).

edited August 2017 in Software
Hello. I've managed to install Windows NT 3.51 and SP5 along with most post-SP5 updates successfully, but whenever I try to install Internet Explorer 5 (16-bit), I get this error after rebooting:

PCTCPAPI.DLL Error

PCTCPAPI083: 4.10 PC/TCP kernel and VxD not loaded.

Your application would be adversely affected.
DLL initalization failed.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • As I recall, the dialer component is not compatible with NT - you must use Ethernet. It should not have attempted to install it though. Probably uninstall and re-install without the dialer.
  • Have you perhaps tried an older IE version? or the 32 bit version of IE?
  • The 32-bit versions of IE don't run under NT 3.51. (Unless you count IE 1/2).

The latest 32-bit browser that runs under NT 3.51 is Firefox 2/Seamonkey 1.1 located here: http://toastytech.com/files/95browsing.html
