Commander Keen 1, messing up on 286 system.

edited July 2017 in Software
I've managed to format both of the "5.25 floppy disks now, and I got Commander Keen 1 into the Packmate III.

However when the game starts up, it says "vga card not detected", "joy stick not dexted", then it starts up, but ends up like this:

I've heard that Keen is an EGA game.... all EGA games run perfectly on my system. When I choose "E[game name].exe" other games run just fine.

The IBM PS/2 8512 Monitor I have is VGA, but I am guessing the video card is EGA then.

What could be the issue here? I did download this game from archive.org, but still, it should work.

EDIT: Solved this on my own, deleted the folder with the files, then re-copied off of a "3.5 diskette this time.

It seems the problem was that I copied it off of a "5.25 diskette last time, and as SomeGuy just educated me, i have 360k disks, and formatting them in 1.2mb may not be reliable.

  • Commander Keen is an EGA/VGA game. It runs in both.
If your video card was EGA it would have a 9-pin connector (similar to CGA).
VGA has the 15-pin connector. As you could connect the PC to the VGA Monitor, your video card must be VGA, not EGA.

yes it is VGA. As I said, I fixed the problem, it not says "Vga card detected".
