Need help with my thinkpad 380xd again, 2 driver issues

edited April 2017 in Software
I am having issues with 2 drivers that need to be loaded in windows for workgroups 3.11, The issue is I need the IR networking and PCMCIA since I have IR networking device to get my thinkpad on the internet and I have a PCMCIA that i use. The issue is the PCMCIA software in wfw 3.11 needs a setting config.sys for emm386.exe which is X=D000-D7FF , but if that is set the IR network driver will not load saying it doesn't have a enough memory to load, if the X setting isn't there the IR drivers work fine, but the PCMCIA will not work in Wfw 3.11 without the X settings for emm386.exe. the pcmcia software utilty says if you have emm386 enabled you need XD000-D7FF set, since it needs a 4K of memory that can't be accessed by emm386. So i need to figure out how to get the PCMCIA drivers and IR networking drivers working at the same time when EMM386 is loaded. If anyone can help me that is great.

Note: This is a repeat question, nobody answered it so its being reposted, it was in the winbosrds threads when you load the website, there was so many other posts that it lost being in it after that day, I think questions should stay in winboard threads longer if there is no answer to it. Or they should add a thing to the site that has threads that have no answer.

  • Too little info.

    Have you obtained official IBM docs for your machine?

    Did you use the Card Wizard to attempt to resolve conflicts?

    Yes I have tried the card wizard, the cardwizard is what is causing the problem, it wants to add a setting to emm386, which makes the IR driver stop working, saying there is not enough memory.

    Well, I have no doubt it is reporting the real problem. So, how does the IRDA driver load: is there any obvious clue in config.sys?

    Looks like they both need 32k of memory and are both trying to use/allocate the same chunk.

    On IBM systems, Cardsoft says (I'm going by the README) IRQ 9 cannot be used for PCMCIA.

    " If your PCMCIA card is not functioning properly and IRQ 9 is
    used, add the following line to CSALLOC.INI and reboot your
    system.

    IRQEXCLUDE=9"

    And sometimes, just changing the order where each line is written to in config.sys and system.ini can resolve issues.

    Not knowing whether you have the manual already or not - you can get a PDF of it here:
    https://www.manualowl.com/m/Lenovo/Thin ... oad/308826

    It calls out all the hardware details, including the PCMCIA controller.

    There is no clue in config.sys on how the IRDA loads. IF they both need 32K chunk of memory what can i do? I have check the manuals and nothing is working, on that edit you made, that is the same setting i am using already this : DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-D7FF
  • Dunno, I don't have that machine & you haven't posted the config.sys. Bt something somewhere calls csalloc.ini:
    " If your PCMCIA card is not functioning properly and IRQ 9 is
    used, add the following line to CSALLOC.INI and reboot your
    system.

    IRQEXCLUDE=9"

    Each time I googled info, these guys came up. Seems to me you should make buddy-buddy with that crowd. I bet they been there, done that..

    I will also point out in my meager effort, I noted that only Windows 95 and NT are mentioned as the operating system(s) for that machine - not Win 3.1.

    Yes but this machine has windows 3.1 support as well , very few people used windows 3.1 , but it did work when configured correctly, I am going to ask https://forum.thinkpads.com/ to see if they know a solution to the issue.
