Windows NT & Parallel Crossover Cables

As someone who never did use a direct cable connection in the past, I only just discovered how Windows NT unlike Windows 9x doesn't want to know about direct cable connections via parallel crossover cable.

I could find references to this that it's not supported including Windows 2000 and XP, though I haven't been able to find the reasoning behind it.
