IBM PC DOS 5.00 box set (Value?)

edited March 2017 in Software
Yesterday I was gifted with what seems to be a complete box set of PC DOS 5.00. Inside the box there are three small booklets; Getting Started, Keyboards and Code Pages, and Program License Information. There is a large book, User's Guide and Reference. A small insert labeled Service Information Card is also in the box, along with a styrofoam insert. Saving the best for last, a sealed "Media Envelope" with the license agreement printed on it contains the diskettes.

Just wanted to know if the set is complete and if it is, what's it worth? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Well, IBM DOS 5.0 is fairly common on eBeh right now. It would probably have more value if the entire box were still sealed.

Off hand I would say perhaps $20-$25 plus shipping.

Not sure why that one sold for $39+shipping, that seems a little high. If you have the patients you may eventually find a buyer with more money than brains.

Also keep in mind there were several releases. 5.0, 5.01, and 5.02 at least. Not sure how those compare.
  • The version is 5.00. Those prices aren't terrible, especially for how cheap it supposedly was. My stepdad found it at a thrift shop, paid next to nothing for it and gave it to me. Wasn't really planning on selling it, just curious about what it may be worth. For now, it'll be a nice addition to my collection. Looking at the listings, most of those boxes say "DOS 5.0" and have a little medal or ribbon in the lower right-hand corner. A few of those boxes look like mine, however; the medal in the corner is gone, the version number is in small text near the bottom, and DOS is spelled out instead of acronym'd. Wonder what differences there are, if any, other than the packaging...
  • I think 3.5" BOX package of IBM PC DOS 5.00 is Not rare though it is sealed or unused.

But 5.25" version is more rare than 3.5"
