Windows ME/98 Security Update Feb 2004

edited November 2014 in Software
Hey guys. I have a physical copy of this CD.
It is 459MB and I was considering uploading it for people but I'm not sure if it has any benefit. I mean, does the download of the full versions of ME and 98 contain all the updates/latest versions? If not I'll be more than happy to upload this thing and post a link here. Although, I'm not sure where to upload it at for free. It also contains fixes for XP and 2000 so I wasn't sure if that would disqualify it from being posted here.

So, if you want it I can post it as a ZIP or ISO.

  • The isos hosted here are untouched media, containing no updates. As far as I know there weren't any surefire ways to integrate updates into 9x/ME like the slipstreaming features of 2k/XP.

I'd think some screenshots or a directory listing of the cd would be helpful, is this specifically just the updates for that month? You'd still need an awful lot of updates before and after that point as well to truly have an up to date system.

Not too many one-click sites have a size limit this large, although I think you could upload a file this large at http://www.killerleaks.com. I see files in their catalog as large as 499MB so I would speculate that they have a 500MB limit.
  • Hope this posts.
Here is an idea of the directory structure of the disk.
Sorry, I tried to register but never got anything in my email.

If I remember correctly we only had dialup in 2004 at my house so I had to order an update CD from Microsoft.
It was only a few bucks, possibly free, and was going to take about as long to ship it as it would to download it with a 33-36kbps connection.
  • If the 9X folder has around 14 files like that ME folder then perhaps it is only the updates for that specific patch period, but the remaining files on the disc are prerequisites for other things.

For 98 there are a couple unofficial update packs that include everything a stock install needs to be fully updated and then fixes made by the community afterwards.

I'm not sure if ME got such love, there are some signs that unofficial packs were made for it as well but I'm not sure how developed they are.

Overall I'd say its interesting to be able to see what these cds that they mailed out contain, but generally the contents seem publicly available already and don't need to be hosted.

Here is a thread I found where people ordered it.
    http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/14699 ... update-cd/
There is an image of the case at the bottom of the first page.

    It also contains:
*Windows98 Updates folder with 28 files
*Also contains a folder with sub-folders of DirectX9b, IE6 SP1, MDAC?, and windows Media player folders with what appears to be WM9 and 7.1?

There is also a few posts claim it is updates all the way through either Feb 2004 or OCT 2003

And I swear I remember a Jan or so 2006 update CD could be ordered that had ME, 2000, and 98 updates on it, but when you go to MS site now it's like they just stripped that out of it.
At any rate, I guess it could save some time with a fresh install. Though, I assume there are still other updates to download until 06
