nice pixel art. I'm more of a Minecraft architect. Built some cool houses back in the day, of last year :P.

I'd link to a pic of my old "mountain house" which was sweet but my web server's down :/

I've recently become addicted to Minecraft. I built a really epic house with this awesome basement... then I dug too far and flooded it.

I used to be like you... but then I took an arrow in the knee (is that meme dead yet?).

Seriously though, why play any game? Because it's entertaining.

I haven't played it yet... I'm still occupied playing civilization V or starcraft when I have the chance.

Minecraft is wonderful.

I've also built houses and castles. I even made a whole castle village once, complete with drawbridges.

I've played Minecraft several times with some online friends of mine.

Vanilla Minecraft gets boring after a while, but when you start adding mods like IndustrialCraft that add machinery and electricity it becomes spergtastic load of fun.

It's a shame getting mods to work in Minecraft is such a pain in the ass, manually putting shit into jar files and making sure everything is the right version. What we did is have one person get the client set up, zip his .minecraft folder minus login information and pass it around. Then you have to do it for the server jar files.

Yeah that's notch's fault. It also sucks that it requires a slightly beefy system to render an 8-bit world. I understand there's a lot going on, but sheesh, does it really have to make my Core 2 lag? XD

I don't think Notch has ever heard the term "Optimization". :P

It's Java... how optimized can it get?

And a Core 2 isn't really beefy by today's standards.

Very true. Very very true. But it doesn't change the fact that Minecraft is really simple, lol.

It's funny actually, after running it on my Core 2 laptop, and my Pentium G620 desktop, that I once ran it on my Pentium 4 desktop. I have NO idea how I stomached that.

I've never ran it on anything besides my desktop (AMD Phenom II X4 965).

Minecraft's, I think, gotten a bit better optimized over time though... I can run it tolerably on my P4 2.8 HT, with 1GB of RAM, and a pretty crappy GeForce 4 MX, a 64MB AGP card. It gets ~20FPS on Small view distance, and Fancy graphics. I haven't tried Optifine on that one, I bet it would run quite a bit better.

I gave a friend of mine another P4, a 3.4, with a GeForce 5200 MX 128MB AGP, and I got it to run at a solid 30, up to 40 FPS, on Normal/Fancy.

It's manageable, even on semi crappy computers.

Optifine really helps, and it helps by doing some of the things you'd think Notch would enable by default, lol.

Java 7 also helps a lot.

Still, it's less the constant lag, and more the lag spikes that gets me.

OptiFine helps with lag spikes if you change autosave from the default 2s to 3m. 2s makes stuff really choppy.

This thread inspired me to get my modded server up and running again late last night.

http://tinyemanations.net/mc/

Since it has to be distributed to multiple people I've simplified it as much as possible, a two step process of clearing your .minecraft folder and running the self-extracting 7z archive. That page also lists all the mods currently installed and links to relevant wikis with recipes and the like.

Follow the instructions and launch Minecraft. My server should already be in the list. Connect. You should spawn close to the border between a jungle biome and mushroom biome.

I built a small hut near the spawn to start off at X: -45.0 / Y: 78.6 / Z: 59.7, there's a crafting table and chest. Press F3 to see your current coordinates.

There isn't anything built yet besides the hut mentioned above , but we (we being myself and other people I've previously played with from a gaming community) will likely get to work over the weekend, so anyone who's interested is welcome to join.

Yes it runs on Linux just fine, in fact, it's running on Rioter's box right now in a screen.

Previously we had issues with past versions of Minecraft where some mods didn't seem to work right on Linux but did when the server ran on Windows, but I haven't tested it enough to be sure all the mods are is 100% but at a basic level everything seems to be working.

Just an update:

We started on a new seed a few days ago, island survival. We've built up quite the base as it is already, two completed Buildcraft quarries have harvested us lots of resources in combination with a huge network of caves. Added a few modifications including Rei's Minimap (client-side) and Infinite Lava Source for IC2/BC.

Next on the agenda is getting a power network running, and if more people join, a rail network connecting to different places though this is the only decent natural island within a 500m radius of spawn. I moved the spawn point some distance off shore so spawn protected blocks wouldn't be a problem. There's a 30x30 platform one block beneath the surface that should you spawn on (slightly visible in the far back of the image below), with the main island directly ahead.

Image

I've packaged a new self-extracting 7z archive on my site linked above for anyone who wants to join. The server is generally up 24/7.

I think MC multiplayer with mods enabled would be tremendously fun, but it's annoying that a lot of Minecraft players are either (a) 5, or (b) retarded, (or both), and can't seem to figure out the installation even if I provided such a 7z archive. And while I could just redirect the tards to another server, some of my friends who are pretty good at Minecraft absolutely fail when trying to install mods.

That's where Spout is pretty cool, but I also prefer to allow Mineshafter authentication so I don't have to buy multiple licenses for test accounts, and yeah I don't honestly care at all if people are too poor or too cheap or too stupid to buy Minecraft, but apparently the Spout crew is really anti-piracy there and they flipped when I mentioned "extermal username authentication." I really hate it when people get all obsessed about trying to shame people out of piracy, or allowing it... but I won't go on an IP rant right now anyway :P

Spout used to provide their launcher, in effect, in a zipped form so I could hack it together and allow Mineshafter users to play, with Spout, on the server, effectively reducing bandwidth and everything. But now they don't. Bummer.

Notch is a real nig when it comes to mods and such. Things would be simpler if he'd allow people to distribute premodified minecraft.jar files, but no no.

Clearly I don't give a flying fuck, hence my site and download. I made it as simplistic as possible.

I wish Minecraft had a standardized way to install mods easily without having to modify the core jar file, similar to Garry's Mod and it's addons. Given that most of the mods now only require MCForge and ModLoader in the jar file itself, if he'd work with them and integrate it into Minecraft, most modding would simply be a matter of dropping the zip/jar into the mods directory. That'll never happen though.

yeah, true, it probably won't. I'm not crazy for mods much, but some things like the minimap and such are quite convenient and it annoys me when Notch integrates his own crappy version of a previously 3rd party feature, that's far less cool. Or adds something retarded (i.e. swamps, jungles, The End (are you kidding me?), dragons, and potions). This isn't WoW :P

And stuff like death notifications, there was that awesome plugin called DeathTP+ which had awesome death notifications, which were properly formatted and configurable and such. But then Notch just had to integrate crappy, non-configurable death notifications into the server so that you have to use yet another plugin to manually remove them, if you don't like the shitty ones :P
