I can't seem to open the iso image for MacOS 8.1

The archive or the actual image? The image won't be openable with Windows, but there shouldn't be an issue getting it to work mounted in an emulator or burned to disc and putting that in a real or emulated Mac.

ever thought about being more detailed in your posts? for starters the error from basilisk would probably help. we are not magical mind readers here....

Try installing OS 7 then upgrade.

well i first installed System 7.5.3 from Apple's servers (it's in 19 parts). I installed it with CD-ROM support but when i mount the image it says the volume is not formatted.

Is the OS 8.1 image formatted as hfsplus? Because OS 7.x doesn't support reading that filesystem.
