compaq presario 4704 video card help.

I have a compaq presario 4704. It had windows 95 on it and i formatted and installed windows 98se. The video card is a s3 trio 32/64 and when i had windows 95 on it i could get high color (16 bit) with 1024 by 768 pixels. Now if i go up to that resolution i can only do 256 colors. only 800 by 600 i can do high color (16 bits) or lower resolution. Of course i didn't save any of the software that came with the computer like the phone center or drivers. My friend gave me this computer to play with and i can't get high color and resolution now. Thanks for the help i can get.

    You can go into device manager and try to select a different S3 driver.

    No i can't select a different s3 driver. I tried to download a driver from the s3 driver page but you can't download from there. I get a time out page reset warning. I download a driver from driverguild web page and it's for windows 95/98 but all that did was update the driver dates and added other resolution above 1024 by 768 pixels but still won't let me pick a higher color. I think it had software on it to make you pick higher colors by using system memory. The video card is built in with 1mb of memory. I wish i could of save the software from it. But i guess that what happens when you are in a rush. I have to see if i can find restore cd online for it. Thanks for the help i got.

    When links like that go dead try using Archive.org's wayback machine, they had copies of the downloads. I'm guessing this is the one you'd want to try.
